ATHENS - Advanced Technology Higher Education Network

Are you a third-year bachelor's or master's student looking to take a short break during the semester?

The ATHENS Network facilitates cooperation between 15 large and prestigious (mostly technically oriented) universities across Europe. Each semester, about 30 students from the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, travel to selected destinations to participate in 7-day intensive courses focused on research and development of various technologies in a wide range of fields.  The aim is to gain new international experience, so you cannot apply for courses organized by the partner CTU.

January 7, 2026 - Current information, please read!

Due to Ramadan, the duration of courses organized by Istanbul Technical University has been shortened. For the March 2026 session, do not register for courses marked ITU...!!! The University of Chemistry and Technology will not organize these trips or provide any financial support for them.

  • You must select at least 3 courses.  Applications with fewer courses will be rejected/placed at the end of the priority list. You cannot select a course organized by CTU. The aim of the program is to gain new international experience.
  • You can only choose courses marked with the abbreviation BIP if you have the option to enroll in the elective course International Internship for 3 ECTS.

  • Due to Ramadan, the duration of courses organized by Istanbul Technical University has been shortened. For the March 2026 session, do not register for courses marked ITU...!!! The University of Chemistry and Technology will not organize these trips or provide any financial support for them.
Select Czech Technical University (CTU) as the sending institution, through which the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague is connected to the ATHENS network. Enter your student card number (ISIC) in the "Student Identity Number" field.

Print out the completed online application in PDF format and have it signed by the vice-dean for educational activities at your faculty (in the case of ÚEM students, it is signed by doc. Vlachý).

!!! To successfully complete the application, you must fill in the registration form at the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, and upload a signed scan of the application here:

This is followed by the selection of students. The selection takes into account the student's grade point average and participation in student associations (ESN, IAESTE).
  • Students can apply repeatedly even if they have already participated in ATHENS. However, priority is given to students who are going to ATHENS for the first time.

Course selection results

According to the schedule in the table, you will be notified within a few days of the application deadline whether you have been selected for Athens.  This is followed by a short period during which the system processes applications and assigns courses according to your priorities and the number of applications.

You will see the result of which course you have been assigned to in the portal where you applied. There you will also find all further instructions from the host school. You will receive an email from the international department with more detailed information on the next steps to take to receive your scholarship.
  • At this point, you can start arranging accommodation, transportation, and insurance.

Participation Agreement

The International Office will send you instructions on what personal data we need to prepare the agreement, and you will prepare confirmation of your travel arrangements.

  • Once all the documentation is ready, you will receive an invitation to sign the financial agreement at the International Office. The scholarship will be sent to the account specified in SIS after signing this agreement. The agreement describes all the obligations of the participants.

Scholarship

Unlike other participating schools, the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague offers financial support for your trip.  In most cases, however, the scholarship will not cover all your expenses. It is only a contribution towards travel and accommodation. Be sure to calculate carefully how much such a trip will cost.

Carefully review the information available on the organizing school's website for your chosen course. Find out the cost of accommodation and meals, and don't forget that each course includes EDA (European Dimension Activities), a mandatory non-teaching part of the program for which the organizers charge participation fees. Find out the amount in advance. This is a mandatory expense.

Before departure and during stay

Participation in the program is mandatory.

If you fall ill or are unable to participate in the program for other reasons, notify your host coordinator as soon as possible and ask how to proceed. At the same time, let us know so that we are aware that something is happening.

We recommend that all students traveling abroad register on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website in the DROZD database.

In the event of an emergency, the embassy will assist in organizing help for those who voluntarily provide information about their planned stay abroad.

What are my responsibilities after returning?

After successfully completing the course, you will have two certificates available on the Athens portal (according to the schedule in the table above). Certificate of Attendance and Certificate of Grades. In addition, you will prepare a poster with a final report and submit everything to the International Office using the form that will be sent to you by email.

  • Certificate of Attendance (confirmation of participation after the end of the course will be available for download on the ATHENS portal)
  • or Certificate of Grades (confirmation of successful completion of studies will be available for download on the ATHENS portal)
  • Final report

    ECTS?

At the end of each ATHENS session, home universities recognize students' work and reward it with 2 credits (3 ECTS if your course was in BIP mode). Please note that credits are not recognized at the University of Chemistry and Technology in the case of repeated trips (a course that has already been completed cannot be recognized twice).

The International Office sends an email with a list of students from the relevant faculty who have sent all the above-mentioned documents. Please do NOT write to the dean's office yourself; we will take care of everything and put you in the copy of the aforementioned email.

In addition, FCHT students must subsequently submit an application to the dean themselves in order for credits to be awarded. This is done only with the dean's approval. This is a "general application" form. We will remind you in an email.

We always try to send complete lists, so if any of the students are waiting for certificates to be issued, the awarding of credits may be delayed. If you need to register credits earlier for serious reasons, please contact us as soon as possible.
